A journey exploring industries, observing the origins of work and craft

The tradition of using lacquer in daily life has been since the dates back 10,000 years.

Aizuwakamatsu, nestled along the Agano River system and flanked by the Ou and Echigo mountain ranges, boasts a rich history in woodcraft.

This area flourished not just under powerful rulers but also has historical ties to the tea gathering, being a sanctuary for the son of the legendary tea master Sen no Rikyu (Shoan), protected by the Aizu domain's Gamou family.

Significantly, this region has witnessed unbroken human activity since the Jomon era, transitioning through various industrial stages - from the wholesaler-dominated domestic industry of the Edo period to the factory-based handcrafts of the Meiji era, followed by post-war mechanized industry, right up to the present day.

Here, the art of working with wood and lacquer has evolved alongside industry.

Yet, the creativity in crafting tea-gathering tools, where artisans work with joy and playfulness, remains timeless.

In embracing the modern adaptation of the "field tea gathering style," we delve into the creative legacy of this region, a place that has fostered a culture of respect for the wisdom and skills of its forebears.

Wood and Lacquer: Bridging Tradition and Innovation

In this region, where the teachings of the Aizu clan strongly persist, the culture of tea gathering and gardens favored by the samurai have evolved uniquely. Woodworking and lacquer techniques have also developed distinctively, shaped by the passage of time. Here, one can encounter both timeless spirituality and the creative adaptation to changing times.

In settings like old warehouses, traditional homes, inns, and workshops, the transformation goes beyond just renovating or relocating. Masakuni Seki

Sekibikodo Co., Ltd.

Born in 1967 in the historical town of Aizu Wakamatsu of Fukushima prefecture. After working in the corporate world for a number of years, Seki joined Sekibikodo, his family business that specializes in urushi* products, in 2003. 
Since then, he has launched projects such as NODATE to pass on the essence of lacquer to the next generation, and has been involved in space production that utilizes local materials and craftsmanship. In 2021, he opened "Human Hub Tenneiji Warehouse," a place where diverse people can connect, focusing on creating a space where the next generation can envision their dreams.

Shiho Uchiumi

Lacquer Brush Workshop "Hake ya Kitsune" Lacquer Brush Craftsman

In 2013, apprenticed under lacquer brush craftsman Nobuyuki Tanaka in Tokyo. In 2016, became independent in her hometown of Aizuwakamatsu.
In 2020, established the brand "Hake ya Kitsune," engaging in the production and wholesale of lacquer brushes. Alongside her work, She actively welcomes workshop tours and training sessions, aiming to raise awareness about the critical situation of tools and materials in craftsmanship.

Daisuke Ogura

Born in 1975 into a family of woodturners. In 1999, completed the Woodworking Department at the Wajima Lacquerware Technical Training Institute in Ishikawa Prefecture. Apprenticed under woodturner Yasuhiro Satake in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Returned to his hometown in 2005 and started his own independent business, which he continues to run today. He primarily produces works based on orders from lacquer artists and lacquerware wholesalers. Lacquerware production operates on a fully specialized division of labor, supported by various professionals, and he dedicates himself daily to becoming one of these professionals.

During junior college, She encountered lacquer and became captivated by its unique qualities. She enrolled in the Aizu Lacquerware Technical Training School for Successors, and after graduation, she apprenticed under a lacquer master in Aizuwakamatsu City. 
In 2013, She established her own workshop, Komatsu Lacquer Studio. Currently, she primarily produce commissioned lacquerware, while occasionally creating her own original products. She dedicate herself daily to ensuring that her work highlights the allure and characteristics of lacquer.

Rather than focusing on the form focus on the spirit 魂- the question shouldn't be how do we preserve the form of the tea ceremony but why did the tea ceremony emerge, what was the goal (emotional, spiritual, cultural) and how do we interpret this in today's age.
How do we express the spirit, the sould, the 魂 of tea in the 21st century? How do we transform it so it will be ALIVE for the next 500 years? So I think what this should achieve is not consumption but transformation....

The activities were well selected to enable us to connect the dots to understand the key elements of ochado.I was surprised by how willing the craftmasters were willing to spend their time with us to answer our many questions. It was a level of sharing that was deeply meaningful and creates a genuine interaction between us, the visitors, and them, even with our language barriers. If the objective in creating these travel experiences is to give travelers a unique experience, then getting then out of the city where they can get closer to nature and community should be made a signature of the tours. It was only in Aizu that I got to experience all three aspects of the program at the same time - nature, community, and time.

I'm very happy with all the arrangement and the depth of the programs, completely met my expectation. I want to help create a specific pilot trip aiming for Southeast Asian market, particularly those from Thailand and Malaysia. To explore if we can do this on a continuous basis, to achieve the sustainable craft tourism objectives as well as long stay program (5-7 days). I think a monthly sharing events of craft masters with audience with english translation would be useful, to form a global community in Kyoto, both offline and online. So people know who are craft masters and where to go and learn and what are things that they can learn and join. All could be further turned into online clips to further promote through out the world.

漆器は1000年にも渡って私たちに親しまれています。森で育った木を使い器にし、また漆の木から漆を採取し器に塗り仕上げていく。まさに自然と長く関わってきた私たちの知恵が詰まっている製品とも言えます。

しかしながら、そのような漆器も時代の大きな流れのなかで、大きな課題に直面しています。プラスティックなどの簡易な代用品によって生活の必需品としての地位ではなくなっている現状があります。そのようななかで多くの挑戦が行われそして新しい道を歩み始めているのです。

大きな課題に直面しているのは他の業界も同様です。多くの社会的な課題に直面するいま、地球視点で考えた経営の推進が必要になってきています。漆にまつわる生産者を巡る中で自社に照らし合わせて探究し、今後のアクションを構想するプログラムです。

日本において私たちの生活に溶け込んでいる漆器が1000年必要とされ愛されている要因を探究していきます。また直面している課題を知り、その対策について学びます。

漆器が生産される工程を山から町までのジャーニーによって、自社における生態系全体を捉え直していき、サステナブルな事業展開をイメージしていきます。

生活様式の変化により漆全体業界での挑戦を通じて、自社が提供している事業/サービスにおける変容を構想します。

DAY 1
旅に参加するメンバーが集合し、「サステナブル経営への変容を促す生態系ダイナミクス」についてオリエンテーションを実施。当該プログラム全体像を理解し、自社について振り返りつつ、旅をスタート。
DAY 1
京都市の北に位置する京北町へ移動し、漆の生態系の起点となる森を散策。京北町の土地性や歴史などを聞きながら、漆が育っている現場を目の当たりにしつつ、漆における生態系ダイナミクスをたどっていきます。
DAY 1
夜は、参加者と旅を共創する方々とで食卓を囲みながら、交流を行う時間に。風土に根ざした料理を味わいながら、実際に活動している方々の物語を通じて、日本における工藝の文脈とこれからのストーリーを学びます。
DAY 2
京都市内へ移動し、1日目の京北町での体験を振り返りつつ自社の生態系全体を把握するためのワークショップを実施。事業活動における生態系を把握し、サステナブル経営における課題を抽出する。
DAY 2
1909年に創業し、京都市内で漆の精製を手がけている「堤淺吉工房」を訪問。漆の精製工程を見学しつつ、漆にまつわる物語や思い、漆を取り巻く現状・課題について学びつつ、これからの取り組みについて考える時間に。
DAY 2
漆の工房見学を振り返りつつ、自社の事業・サービス展開の課題を掘り下げるワークショップを実施。自社の事業・サービスにおいて現時点でのステークホルダーを見つめ直し、地球視点で見た場合にどのようなイノベーションが必要なのかを捉え直す。
DAY 3
三代にわたり、京都で漆を塗る仕事「塗師」の方々がはたらく「西村圭功漆工房」を訪問。製品のコンセプトづくりから最終的な製品に仕上げていくまでの過程を学ぶ。さらに職人の手仕事を見学後、参加者自身も漆塗り体験へ
DAY 3
旅の締めくくりとなるワークショップを実施。旅でめぐった取り組み全体を振り返りつつ、自社におけるサステナブル経営を実現する生態系ダイナミクスを構想。サービス全体像を振り返り、これからつくりたい未来に向けたアクションを考える。
